Long term influences

These are factors that always influence voting behaviour:

  • Party Identification & loyalty
  • Class
  • Age
  • Gender
  • Religion
  • Ethnicity
  • Religion

Short term influences

These are factors that only affect voting behaviour for that election:

  • The economy: links to raitional choice, can be argued to be long term
  • Personal qualities & appeal of leader
  • Media
  • Style & effectiveness of caimpaign
  • Events leading up to election: e.g. 'Winter of discontent' wrecked Labour's chances of winning the election in 1979 & the falklands war boosting Thtcher's popularity in 1983
  • Issue & party images
