For a valid diagnosis, the doctor must:
- Distinguish between depression and other mental disorders
- Distinguish between different types of depression
Co-morbid diagnosis-
- Depression can occur alongside other disorders.
There's a tradition in psychiatry that clinicians should treat the disorder that occured first.
However with depression that is often hard to identify, but with depression being so serious it isn't too important which disorder is treated first as long as they both receive treatment.
