Problems surrounding classification and diagnosis

Most peoples moods vary over time, so reliable diagnosis is difficult. Another problem is assessing the degree of depression. Diagnosis was originally performed by clinical intwerviews, but use is increasingly made of depression inventories. 

  • Einfield et al (2002) found high levels of agreement between skilled clinicians in diagnosing depression, implying a high degree of inter-rater reliability
