Urban Heat Island- Case Study Chicago

?

Chicago Urban Heat Island

  • Chicago is warmer by 2 degrees celsius on average
  • It has notoriously gusty areas.
  • Winds from Lake Michigan are blocked by buildings.
  • Chicago is less humid because the city is warm and suface water is quickly removed by drains. There is also less vegetation that emits water vapour in transpiration.

What has been done to reduce this heat island?

Rooftop garden on Chicago's city hall.

Grants to residents who plant roopftop gardens and trees.

Resurfaced pavements in the city to have a higher albedo.
