McGregor an american psyschologist wrote about how leaders attitudes may effect behaviour.

Theory X and Y

  • X= Employees motivated solely by money
  • Y=Employees want more than just financial gain

Theory X

X leaders believe:

  • average worker dislikes work and will avoid it
  • people must be controlled and directed and possibly punished to put in real effort.
  • typical worker wants to avoid responsibility and has little ambition
  • employees look for a security above all else at work
  • not inspired

Theory Y

Y leaders believe:

  • working is natural for most employees
  • typical worker enjoys work
  • other means exist to motivate workers rather than control or punishment
  • workers want responsibility
  • most employees have skills that help an organization achieve their objectives
