Detail of the Boer War:

  • Britan was fighting the Dutch s in South Africa 
  • Boer troops were formed of reltively small groups of farmers compared to the professonal British troops.
  • Britan suffered many defeats but overal they won.
  • 5,000 killed. 
  • 16,000 died from disease. 
  • Cost over £200 million.

What were civilian attitudes before the war?

  • Took pride in British achievements.
  • Expected the government to protect Britan's interests abroad.
  • Strong, efficient military forces.
  • Supported an aggressive foregin policy.
  • Showed an eagerness for war (Jingoism)

What Military Reforms happened as a result of the

  • Due to poor performance and low public morale, reforms were needed. 
  • 1906- Royal Navy lauched the Dreadnought.
  • 1906- The Boy Scouts movement was set up; 70% joined the army. 
  • British Expeditionary Force (BEF)- they were a rapid response unit trained for over seas.  
  • The Territonary Force- part time soliders.

What social reforms happened as a result of the Bo

  • 1906- Liberal governement introduced social reforms.
  • 40% of recuits to the army were unfit. 
  • Government set up the Committee on Physical Deterioration to Investigate. 
  • Improvements for Poor: a ban on overcrowding slum houses, no more smoke pollution. 
  • Improvements for Children: nurseries, free school meals, medical inspections in school.

What were the reasons for the Liberal Reforms?

  • The Boer War highlighted military and health problems.
  • Social reforms (charles booth, Seeboham rowntree) investigate the conditions of poor people and problems faced by working class.
  • The poor could no longer help themselves but needed help.
  • Unfit people could effect the economic position.
  • Liberal party feared people would vote Labour.

  • 1907- School medicalinspections began
  • 1908- Pensions introduced.
  • 1909- Labour exchanged (job centers) were set up.
  • 1911- National Insurance Act.
  • 1914- Compulsory Free School Meals.
