protocols are a set of communication rules which control:
the format of the message
the type of error checking to be used
any compression
how the sending device indicates that its finished sending
how the recieving device indicates that its recived the message

impact of standards
if computers aren't communicating using the same protocols, then communication between devices may not work or the messages recieved will be incorrect
important that netwrok administrators ensure the devices used are capable of supporting the needs of the network
