The Scientific Approach

  • THE SCIENTIFIC APPROACH METHOD INVOLVES BOTH PROCEDURE AND LOGIC
  • THE AIM OF SCIENTIFIC SOCIOLOGY IS TO BE RELIABE AND VALID
  • SCIENTIFIC APPROACH IS MOSTLY EXPERIMENTS HOWEVER CAN ALSO BE OBSERVATION AND STATISTICAL TESTS.
  • USUALLY HAS A HYPOTHESIS AND TESTS IT BY USING THE EXPERIMENTAL METHOD
  • EXPERIMENTAL METHOD INVOLES MANIPULATING IV, DV AND EV
  • IV= INDEPENDENT VARIABLE(THE CAUSE)
  • DV= DEPENDENT VARIABLE (THE EFFECTS)
  • EV= EXTRANEOUS VARIABLE (OTHER FACTORS THAT MAY INFLUENCE RESULTS)
  • COMTE AND DURKHEIM FAVOURED THESE METHODS BECAUSE OF THEIR SUCCESS AND TESTING KNOWLEDGE OF NATURAL SCIENCE
  • DURKHIEM ARGUES THAT A COMPARATIVE SURVEY WAS AN APPROPRIATE SUBSTITUE FOR THE EXPERIMENT DUE TO THE THINKING OF BOTH METHODS BEING SIMILAR.
