  • Division of labour- teaches workplace skills

  • Socialises young people into the basic values of society- achievement, equality of opportunity

  • Essential for effective role allocation- social stratification
  • education sifts,sorts and grades individuals in terms of their talents and abilities
  • meritocratic principles-

Education is necessary for society because:

  • Societies which reward different positions unequally can be shown to have beneficial effects
  • Education is run on meritocratic principles
  • In society we have an unequal distribution of ability and effort
