Define civil partnership

  • a legal ceremony giving a homosexual couple the same legal rights as a husband and wife
  • before the 1960s homosexuality was illegal in the UK
  • the Civil Partnership act was passed in 2004, allowing them to get the equivilant of married
  • Groups such as Stonewell have helped to changed the attitude towards homosexuality by giving a better acceptance of equal rights

  • 48% of people think living together is just as much of a commitment as marriage, taken from the British Society Attitudes survey in 2008
  • Its more acceptable to live together before marriage
