Examples of attempts at nuclear non-proliferation/

  • 1968 Non-Proliferation Treaty
  • 1969 Strategic Arms Limitations Talks I or SALT I- Led to the Anti Ballistic Missiles treaty.
  • 1979 SALT II resulted in an agreement but the USA chose not to ratify it because of the Soviet war in Afghanistan. Neither the Soviet Union or the USA ratified the agreement and it expired in December 1985 and was not renewed.
  • 1991 Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty or START I singed between the USA and USSR. It was the largest strategic arms reduction agreement in history which came in to force in 1994. The final implementation in 2001 resulted in the removal of around 80% of the nuclear warheads then in existence.
  • 2002 SORT- Treaty on Strategic Offensive Reductions. both parties agreeing to limit their Nucelar Arsenal to between 1,700 and 2,200 operationally deployed warheads each. It was signed by both parties on 24 May 2002.
  • 2010 New START - Under terms of the treaty, the number of strategic nuclear missile launchers will be reduced by half. A new inspection and verification regime will be established, replacing the SORT mechanism. It does not limit the number of operationally inactive stockpiled nuclear warheads that remain in the high thousands in both the US and Russian inventory.
  • US President Donald Trump discussed the New START treaty with President Putin in his first 60 minute phone call with the Kremlin. Putin enquired about extending the treaty, but Trump predictably attacked it, claiming that it was too heavily in Russia's favour and that it was one of the "several bad deals negotiatied by the Obama administration".
