Milton, Dorset

Milton was originally named Middleton and was a market town with almshouses, a brewery, traders, and inns. It grew up around a 10th-century church and monastery. In the 1770s, Joseph Damer bought Milton Abbey but felt that the town itself 'spoilt the view'. He convinced the community to leave, some were forced due to the lack of trading that could take place with Damer closing the local roads, one resident - William Harrison - successfully sued, with the court ruling that demolition would have to wait until after he died. An act of parliament was needed to move the grammar school, to Blandford. Lancelot Brown was an influential landscape artist who designed the new village of Milton Abbas, where some of the original residents of Milton were offered new homes. The new village was created with the spoil from the demolition of Milton.
