ADDING AND SUBTRACTING FRACTIONS

+

TO ADD FRACTIONS MULTIPLY THE DENOMINATORS TO GET THE SAME NUMBER UNDERNEATH ALL FRACTIONS. MULTIPLY THE NUMERATORS BY THE SAME AS THE DENOMINATORS, THEN ADD THE FINAL NUMERATORS TOGETHER.

E.G     2/3 + 3/4 = 17/12 = 1 5/12

-

TO SUBTRACT FRACTIONS MULTIPLY THE DENOMINATORS TO GET THE SAME NUMBER UNDERNEATH ALL THE FRACTIONS. THEN MULTPLY THE NUMERATORS BY THE SAME AS THE DENOMINATORS, THEN SUBTRACT THE FINAL NUMERATORS.

E.G     2/4 - 1/3 = 2/12

SOLVING SIMPLE EQUATIONS

TO SOLVE A SIMPLE EQUATION:

  • READ THE EQUATION:  3X + 12 = 102
  • DO THE INVERSE OPERATION TO THE OPERATION IN THE EQUATION WITH THE KNOWN NUMBER: 102 - 12 = 90
  • THEN DIVIDE (OR MULTIPLY) THE FINAL NUMBER BY THE AMOUNT OF 'X': 90 / 3 = 30
  • X = THE ANSWER: X = 30
