Connell Argued that there were a range of masculinities and that they are socially constructed, set of experiences on how men should behave

Hegemonic Masculinities associated with

  • male supremacy (power & authority)
  • heterosexuality
  • aggression and "laddish" culture

Complicit Masculinity

a masculinity of new men, e.g. take up a new role in the family

Marginalised Masculinity

  • applicable to those whom the changing nature of the labour market over the last 40 years has meant they no longer assume there will be jobs for them after school
  • sense of loss experienced by these young men
  • MacDonald and Marsh (2005) supported this
