Using an atlas
Latitude is horizontal (fatitude)
Longitude is vertical (long and thin)
Give latitude first when writing coordinates
Types of map
Relief map - has contours which show how far above sea level you are
Thematic map(think 'themes') - Shows desert, what naturally grows, forests, polar, where people live, etc
Ordnance survey map - Has EVERYTHING: contours, telephone boxes, railways...
Road map - Has roads, museums, airports, like a map of man made things
Physical map - Rivers, mountains, lakes; natural landmarks
Political maps - countries
There are 16 compass points.
