Assumptions, hippocrates and the big five

Assumptions:

1. Consistency & stability - Behaviour stable over time in relation to traits, consistent

2. Personality traits have impact on lives - Impact on behaviour, relationships, health e.t.c.

Big five:

  • Neuroticism - experience negative affects e.g. fear, sadness, anger, anxious, hyperchondrial
  • Agreeableness - Agree and go along with others, forgiving, helpful
  • Openness - Appreciate new values, ideas, non-traditional, imaginative, curious
  • Extraversion - sociable, dominant, optimistic, active, fun-loving
  • Conscientiousness - be careful, on time, hardworking, neat, punctual, disciplined

Dimensions: People vary along continuum. Importance of neuroticism (correlation with mental and physical health problems)

4 types of hippocrates: 1. Choleric   2. Sanguine   3. Melancholic   4. Phegmatic

Lombroso, Rentfrow&Gosling and appearance

Cesare Lombroso: Criminals have particular physiogenic characteristics which estimate personality

Examples: a. Large jaws,  b. High cheekbones,   c. Flattened nose,   d. Handle-shaped ears,            e. Scanty beard,      f. Baldness,       g. Fleshy lips

Rentfrow & Gosling, 2003: Structure of music genes:

  • Reflective/complex - Blues, jazz, folk and classical (introspection, structurally complex)
  • Upbeat/conventional - Country, religious, pop (positive emotions, structurally simple)
  • Intense/rebellious - Rock, alternative, heavy metal (energised, rebellious)
  • Energetic/rhythmic - Rap, hip-hop, soul, dance/electronica (Lively + emphasise rhythm)

Physical appearance: 1. Facial structure - aggressive behaviour (width to height ratio)

2. Distinctive - openness    3. Smiling - extraversion    4. Tense - neurotic

Facebook reflects personality rather than self-idealisation - accurate for extraversion/openness

Bedrooms/office: Bedroom easier than office, accurate for opennes, low for agreeableness
