Hyperbole

Definition: Obvious exaggeration not meant to be taken literally

Uses: Used to exaggerate a point, feeling or emotion.

Examples: I was so tired I couldn't open my eyes

                 He ran so fast he was just a blur

Allegory

Definition: When a complex or abstract idea is explained using a simpler concept as an example

Uses: To explain complex meaning and thought and make things the reader has never experianced seem possible.

Example: Animal farm. - Uses animals to explain more simply russian society after the comunist revolution.

Amplification

Definition: When a writer adds more to a scentance which is originally too abrupt to have a large enough effect on the reader.

Uses: To make sure the whole meaning and implications of what is being said are fully understood and emphasise a point.

Example: The research was difficult.  Becomes... The reseach was difficult, hundreds of books had to be looked through, interviews, field work and countless surveys.

Juxtaposition

Definition: Placing two contrasting words or ideas next to each other.

Uses: To highlight the contrast between the ideas or words

Example: In  Jekyll and Hyde, Hyde is described as a 'really damnable man' but in the next scentance Jekyll is called 'the very pink of propriety'.

polysyndeton

Definition: using connectives more than is technically necessary,often in speeches.

Uses: To exaggerate a scentance or to enhance dramatic effect.

Example: They had a pool and a waterslide and a cinema and a trampoline and a horse.
