The language devices are words and phrases that are used to express emotions, feelings, or other non-factual content. When you read a sentence and it feels like it’s coming from the heart, this is because the author has used language devices to make it sound more sincere.

Language devices can be classified into three categories:

  • Figures of Speech: These are expressions which cannot be taken literally. They include metaphors, similes, personification, hyperbole, etc.
  • Figures of Thought: These are expressions which convey what a speaker is thinking of but not what they actually see or hear. They include idioms as well as proverbs and clichés.
  • Punctuation: Punctuation marks also serve as language devices to help readers understand how to interpret the message in a sentence.
