Simile

  • A device used to compare one thing with another.
  • Will always make use of either 'like' or 'as'.
  • Often the statements in similies will exaggerate

For example - 'The trees were like skyscrapers'

                       'The trees stood as tall as skyscrapers'

Metaphor

  • A descriptive method that compares two things.
  • However unlike a simile, a metaphor simply states that the object, person etc. is something else.
  • Therefore it will not make use of 'like' or 'as'.

For example - 'The man had the strength of a lion'

                       'His arms were tree trunks'

Hyperbole

  • Extreme and obvious exaggeration.
  • Used for dramatic and persuasive effect.

For example - 'I had a mountain of work'

                       'I could eat a pig'

Personification

  • A special type of metphor that assigns human charateristics to a non-human object.
  • Used for descriptive purposes.

For example - 'The pen ran across the page'

                       'The sun smiled down'

Pathetic fallacy

  • A special type of personification
  • The weather or surroundings is given human characteristics or emotions
  • Can reflect a characters personality or mood 

For example - 'The sky grew dark and moody

                        'The clouds gathered

Onomatopoeia

  • Words that sound like what they mean.
  • Used to describe real life sounds in word form

For example - 'pop' 'crash' 'bang'

                        'there was a loud bang'

Oxymoron

  • A phrase that combines two opposing ideas.
  • The two words used are contradictory and not normally combined.

For example - 'Living death'

                       'Deafening silence'

Emotive language

  • Language that purposefully ellicts strong emotions from the reader.
  • Adjectives and metaphors are commonly used.

For example - 'The smell of death and destruction was pungent.'

                       'The tears were like acid as they crawled down'
