PERSONIFICATION

Giving qualities of a person to something that is not human / not alive.

e.g.

  • the run down house appeared depressed 
  • her life passed her by
  • the time flew
  • the fire ran wild

HYPERBOLE

Exaggerated language to emphasise / add humor to gain attention (not taken seriously)

e.g.

  • that's the 100th time youve said that

EUPHEMISM

A word considered not too harsh or blunt when refering to something unpleasent

e.g.

  • passed away, instead of died

AN INSPECTOR CALLS:

"Lady of the town", instead of prostitutes

IRONY

When words are used to imply opposite meaning or sarcastic language that can be used to mock.

e.g.

the traffic warden got a parking ticket
