Language and Context

What do we mean by context?

Without knowledge of the context  - spoken or written?

                                                              who are they from/to?

                                                              what is the situation?

It is impossible to know what this language text means.

Is it a: Friendly greeting?

           Aggressive challenge?

           Cry for help?

We generally do know a lot about the context of language and you need to make use of this knowledge when analysing text.
