Prescriptivism

Making a judgement about language, declaring features either good or bad, right or wrong.

E.g a Glottal stop would be viwewed as bad pronunciation

Saying bo'ule instead of bottle.

He categorised attitudes to language use:

• See language as Right or wrong
• See language examples as pleasant or unpleasant (ugly)
• See some language examples socially acceptable or unacceptable
• See some language examples appropriate in their context and others unappropriate.
