1. Preparatory Stage

  • basic motor skills
  • basic principles of spelling system

2. Consolidation Stage

  • up to 6 years
  • child writes in same way they speak
  • short declarative sentences with mainly 'and' conjunctions used
  • incomplete sentence - don't know how to finish the sentence

3. Differentiation Stage

  • up to 9 years
  • child aware of differences between writing and speaking
  • recognises different styles of writing
  • writing reflects child's thoughts and feelings

4. Intergration Stage

  • up to 12 years
  • child develops a personal style
  • understands he style can change according to the purpose
