First Five Year Plan (1951-55)

Nationalisation

Party congress of 1950 recognised need for industrial reform.

75% of industry nationalised

Very high targets.

Lignite- missed targets by 40000.

Dissatisfaction

Many moved to the west.

Lack of consumer goods.

Centralisation

Second Five Year Plan (1956-59)

Increase in consumer goods

Private enterprise only owned 9% of overall industry.

Abandoned in 1959- Seven year Plan

More like USSR.

GDR would surpass FRG- over optimistic.

Wanted to increase worker productivity by 85%.
