Testing for Hydrogen

To test for hydrogen, insert a lighted splint into a test tube filled with the gas (hydrogen) and listen out for a squeaky pop. If this occurs, the test is successful.

Testing for Oxygen

To test for Oxygen, place a glowing splint (NOT LIGHTED) - the same as hydrogen - and look to see if the splint relights. If it does, you have successfully tested for oxygen.

Testing for Carbon Dioxide

To test for Carbon Dioxide, add limewater to it in a beaker and observe. See if the solution turns white or cloudy.

Testing for acids

To test for an acid, add universal indicator to it in a beaker and see if the solution turns red/ orange.

Testing for Alkalines

Finally, testing for alkalines is very similar to testing for acids. Add universal indicator to it in a beaker and see if the solution turns blue/ purple.
