The Ph Scale
Acids: 0-7 Alkali:7-14
1 of 14
Where Is The Neutral Area?
Nearest the middle, they contain mostly water.
2 of 14
Naming the products of neutralisation reactions.
The first part of the name is the name of a metal. The second part of the name comes from the name of the acid.
3 of 14
General Theory for forming equations.
ALKALI + ACID → SALT + WATER
4 of 14
sodium hydroxide + hydrochloric acid.
→ sodium chloride + water
5 of 14
potassium hydroxide + nitric acid .
→ potassium nitrate + water
6 of 14
Things to remember about forming equations.
Always use an arrow not an equals sign. Remember to add water at the end so it is neutral.
7 of 14
Compounds.
Atoms of different elements can join together in chemical reactions to form compounds. For example hydrogen and oxygen are elements. They react together to form water, a compound.
8 of 14
Properties of compounds.
The properties of compounds are usually very different from the properties of the elements they contain. For example hydrogen and oxygen are both gases at room temperature, but water is a liquid.
9 of 14
Balancing Equations.
Chemical equations show what happens in a reaction. In general, we write: reactants → productsThe reactants are the substances that react together. The products are the substances produced in the reaction.
10 of 14
How do we balance the equation? Step 1
Balancing chemical equations isn't difficult, once you know the way to do it. Start by finding out how many atoms of each type are on each side of the equation.
11 of 14
Step 2
Next, look for an element which is in only one chemical on the left and in only one on the right of the equation. (But it is usually a good idea to leave hydrogen and oxygen until you've done the others first.)
12 of 14
Step 3
To balance that element, multiply the chemical species on the side which doesn't have enough atoms of that type by the number required to bring it up to the same as the other side. The number is called the coefficient.

Step 4
Now look for the next element or species that is not balanced and do the same thing.
