Greenhouse Gases

- The gas absorbs the infrared photon

- The photon energy causes the molecule to vibrate

- The molecule gives up this extra energy by emitting another photon

- The gas molecule stops vibrating after the extra energy has been removed by the emitted photon

Different covalent bonds have different strengths, causing different vibration frequencies.

The Greenhouse Effect

Definition

  1. What is the Greenhouse Effect?
  1. The trapping of the sun's warmth in a planet's lower atmosphere, due to the greater transparency of the atmosphere to visible radiation from the sun than to infrared radiation emitted from the planet's surface. An enhanced effect causes global warming.

Useful Table

Major Greenhouse Gas % of Greenhouse Effect Water vapour 36% to 66% Water vapor & Cloud droplets 66% to 85% Carbon dioxide 9% to 26% Methane 4% to 9% Ozone 3% to 7%

Water Vapour & Cloud Droplets(0.01%): H2O, Carbon Dioxide(0.04%): CO2, Methane: CH4, Ozone: O3

Human Impacts

Deforestation:

- Cutting down trees releases carbon dioxide

Fossil Fuels:

- Burning fossil fuels also releases carbon dioxide

Gas Extraction:

- Methane is released during extraction

Fertilisers:

- Primarily release nitrous oxide

CFCs:

- CFCs destroy the ozone layer

Scientific Evidence

Consequences of Global Warming

Global Warming can alter the Earth's climate system, causing the environment to deteriorate.

Weather change can cause severe natural disasters, including storms, heat waves, droughts and floods.

Warmer climates can change the atmosphere so it retains and collects more water, changing weather patterns so wetter places are even wetter drier places are even drier.

Global warming can even, in more serious cases, cause a higher death rate.

Reducing Global Warming

Reducing energy use:

- Adding insulation to attics and walls

- Changing light bulbs to LED bulbs

- Drive less to decrease emissions

- Avoid excess packaging when choosing products

- Reduce the use of electricity (most is generated by turbines, which release steam)

- Plant a new tree for every one cut down
