The fundemental principles

1 of 6

First propostion

Fletcher- 'Only one thing is intrinsically goof; namely love: nothing else at all.'

Actions aren't intrinsically good or evil, they are good or evil depending on how loving the result is.

They are extrinsically good depending on their circumstances and consequences.

  • Extrinsic- not part of the essential nature of someone or something; coming or operating from outside.

Second propostion

Fletcher- 'the ruling norm of chritsian decision is love: nothing else.'

Jesus replaced the Torah with the principle of love, when he worked on the sabbeth day to heal a woman.

The commandments are not absolutes; Jesus broke them when love demanded it, meaning that love replaces law as its above all laws.

Third proposition

Fletcher- 'love and justice are the same, for justice is love distributed, nothing else'

'Justice is coping with a situation where distubution is called for.'

Love and justice cannot be seperated from one another as justice is love at work in the whole community, for the whole community.

Forth proposition

Fletcher- 'love wills the neighbour's good, whether we like him or not.'

Your neighbour is anyone and your agape love goes out to everyone; not just those who we **** bt those who we dislike as well.

Agape love is unconditional; nothing is required in return.
