The Food Standars Agencey is the authority that checks that food manufactureres are adhering to the regulations.

The Uk follows EU rules that:

  • Food lables must not mislead.
  • Food lables must be easily legible and clear.
  • Food labels must emphasise any common allergens listed in the ingrediants.

Mandatory information on food labels

  • List of ingrediants- this makes it easier for people to check if the product suits their diatery needs.
  • Use by date (high risk foods) / best before date.
  • Manufactures name and address.
  • Instructions for cooking- including time and temperature.
  • Where the product was made (country)
  • Genetically modified ingrediants
  • Storage instructions
  • Weight/volume/quantity of item.

Optional information on food labels

  • Serving suggestions.
  • Traffic-light labelling- this gives consumers an idea about ho healthy or unhealthy a product is.
  • Suitability for certain groups.
  • Food origin and packaging information- where the foods were packaged/ processed.
