Flooding evaluation

Strengths:

  • Cost effective: some studies have compared flooding to cognitive therapies and found that patients get freed of their symptoms fast as possible which makes the treatment cheaper.

Limitations:

  • Less effective for social phobias as they have more cognitive aspects - they tend to unpleasant thoughts rather than experiencing an anxiety response. Cognitive therapies may be more suited for social phobias since they tackle the irrational thinking behind the phobia.
  • Treatment is traumatic: Some patients are unwilling to see the treatment until the end because it's a highly traumatic experience - this is a limitation of flooding as time and money is wasted  from preparing the patients only to have them refuse or continue and complete the treatment.
