Regulation requires employers to control exposure to hazardous substances at work. COSHH file must be kept & up to date listing all hazardous substances stored in the premises.
Employers must assess the risk faced by everyone in the service & decide on action needed to control the exposure to hazardous substances. Results must be filed in the COSHH file. The file must:
- Identify & name hazardous substances
- Where it is kept
- How it is labelled
- The effects of it
- Maximum amount of time it is safe to be exposed to it
- How to deal with an emergency involving it
When working with hazrdous substances the care worker should ensure precautions listed in the COSHH file are followed. The file must include guidance for storage, containers should be labelled correctly and maufacturer's instructions must always be followed.
