Introduction To Hazards

A natural event becomes a hazard in a populated place. Hazards can be human or manmade and have an adverse impact on a places population, economy or environment.

Natural Hazards:

  • Climatic (tropical storms, tornadoes, depressions, anticyclones, acid rain, global warming)
  • Earth (volcanoes, earthquakes, mass movement, flooding)

Hazard Event Profiling:

  • Magnitude
  • Speed of onset
  • Duration
  • Areal extent
  • Predictability
  • Frequency
