Atoms have a small nucleus surrounded by electrons, in the middle of the atom
This contains protons and neutrons
Protons- pos. charge
Neutrons- no charge
Nucleus has an overall pos. charge
Electrons are negatively charged and move around the nucleus
They are tiny, but cover a lot of space and occupy shells around the nucleus
Atoms are neutral (no overall charge)
Charge on the electrons = charge on protons, but opposite
Number of protons = number of electrons in an atom
If electrons are added/removed, the atom becomes charged and is an ion
