Burning Fuels

-When hydrocarbons burn they produce carbon dioxide and water

-All fossil fuels produce carbon dioxide and water when they burn

-All fossil fuels contain sulfur, which when it reacts with with oxygen when the fuel is burnt. This produces a gas called sulfur dioxide which is poisonous and acidic, it can also cause acid rain

-When there isnt enough oxygen we get incomplete combustion and we get carbon monoxide which is a posionous gas picked up by your red blood cells which carreis it around the blood instead of oxygen

-High temperature inside a car engine allows the nitrogen and oxygen in air to react together to make nitrogen oxide s, which are poisinous and can trigger people's asthma and also makes acid rain

-Diesal engines burn hydrocarbons with much bigger molecules than petrol engines. When these big molecules react with oxygen they dont completely burn producing tiny particles of carbon and unburnt hydrocarbons. The particulates get carried into the air.
