Polymers

?

Polymers and thermosoftening plastics

A polymer is a chain of monomers joined together. A monomer with a double bond opens up to have single bonds and is able to join with other monomers. This is a polymerisation reaction. Alkenes can be used to make polymers.

monomer         polymer

Ethene              Poly(ethene)

Propene            poly(propene)

Properties of a polymer are determined by the monomer, and the conditions under which the polymer is formed.

A thermoplastic (thermosoftening) is a substance which is able to be moulded over and over, and is flexible and soft. they are easy to recycle.
