Adaptation in Animals

Cold Climates, adaptations include:

  • Thick fur and blubber
  • White in winter and brown in summer (camouflaged)
  • Small ears

Dry Climates, adaptations include:

  • Hunt or feed at night
  • Large surface area (wrinkled skin)
  • Large ears

Surface Area to Volume Ratio

Bigger animals have a smaller surface area compared to their volume therefore conserve heat more easily but it is also more difficult to lose heat.

Adaptation in Plants

  • Plants must be adapted to live in a variety of climates including deserts
  • Plants must also be adapted to survive being eaten by animals

Plant Adaptations In Dry Conditions

Conserve water - e.g. cacti

  • Extensive roots
  • Waxy leaves
  • Small leaves
  • Water storage in stem

Plant Adaptations For Protection

Protection From Predators

  • Thorns
  • Poisonous chemicals
  • Warning colours

Competition In Animals

Animals compete for:

  • Water
  • Food
  • Space
  • Mates
  • Breeding Sites

The most succesful ones survive and pass on their genes to  the next generation

Competition In Plants

Plants compete for:

  • Water
  • Nutrients
  • Light
  • Space

Successful plants have structures and habits that allow healthy growth
