Biological model of addiction (relapse)

Relapse

Stopping smoking at high tolerance levels can result in the unpleasant side effect of withdrawal which includes:

  • Headaches
  • Anxiety
  • Nausea
  • Cravings

These effects can be alleviated by smoking another cigarette.

Smokers repeat this cycle to avoid withdrawal symptoms

It may be harder for people with certain genes to stop smoking.
