Barrister role

  • In a bar theres 12,500 self emplyoed barristers that work in chambersof 15-20 barristers.
  • They employ clerks to be administrator minister that book cases and negotiate fees. (other support staff are employed aswell).
  • After 10 years barristers can apply to be QC's (queens counsel) they take on more complex cases and charge higher fees.
  • Clients can instruct a barrister in some cases and barrister have full rights of audience (meaning they can stand in any court case)

Solicitor role

  • Solicitors are office based and they interview, advise,draft documentations and negotiate. They can work as sole practitioners or in a firm of partners.
  • If they're newly qualified they start as assistant solicitors, they can work their way up to become salaried partners and then they "buy in" to the firm as an equity partner so they can share the firms profit.
  • If they have a great degree they'll work in a large firm however if they're in small firms they'll specialise in family law, criminal law and civil law.They may be expected to advise clients on a wide range of topics like housing wills etc.
  • They could also brief a barrister to provide advice on complex cases.They may also act as an advocate for their client in court. (Solicitors have automatic rights of audience in magistrates & county courts).

Legal executives role

  •  Legal execs can work in a solicitors firm  as an assistant and also a local goverment.
  • Legal executives deal with straight forward matters they have unlimited rights to audience through both civil and criminal proceeding.
  • They charge an hourly rate.
