Acrylic cement

Applications:

  • Use to join sheets of acrylic together

Advanatges:

  • Rapid bonding of acrylics

Disadvantages:

  • Can be difficult to apply and give neat joins
  • Relatively expensive
  • Solvent based so contains VOC's

Polystyrene Cement

Applications:

  • Used to join high impact polystyrene but not expanded polystyrene

Advanatges:

  • Strong bons- melts surface of the epices to be joined and causes them to weld together
  • Able to use a brush to apply and absorbed into joints by capillary action

Disadvantages:

  • Relatively expensive
  • Solvent based so contains harmful volatile organic compounds (VOC's)

Epoxy Resin

Applications:

  • Used to join most materials including expanded polystyrene

Advanatges:

  • High performance adhesive giving high strength bonds
  • Chemical reaction hardens immediately
  • Versatile- is either flexible or rigid, transparent or opaque and thermosetting
  • Excellent heat and chemical resistance

Disadvantages:

  • Reach full strength only after a few days
  • Expensive
  • Often requires manual mixing of resin and hardener which can be messy

PVA (Polyvinyl Acetate)

Applications:

  • Used to join woods and other porous materials

Advanatges:

  • Gives strong joins
  • Relatively inexpensive

  • Surface needs to be securely clamped together for long periods of time in order for the glue to harden
  • Generally not waterproof
