The vaccine

The 5-in-1 vaccine protects against diphtheria, tetanus, polio, Hib and pertussis. 

In the UK, babies are given the vaccine when they are two, three and four months old.

The pre-school booster

The 4-in-1 pre-school booster is given before children start school (between 3 and 5 years old) to boost their protection against whooping cough.

Side effects of the 5-in-1 vaccine

Very common side effects

  • Pain, redness and swelling at the injection site
  • Irritability and increased crying
  • Being off colour or having a fever

Common side effects

  • Loss of appetite
  • Diarrhoea
  • Vomiting

Rare side effects

  • Febrile convulsions (fits)
  • Floppiness

Extremely rare reactions

  • Anaphylactic shock
