Modernism (1880-1940)

Key Words: Form follows function, products for a machine age, everyday objects for everyday people

Rebuild w/ change and modernising post war

Fear modern materials would make design exclusive

  • Combine fine art, functional design, understanding of manufacture technology to  create accessible, affordable products w/ Bauhaus

Materials: Modern materials - chrome tube, leather, plywood

Figures: Brandt, Gropius

Streamlining/American Industrial (1930-50)

Key Terms: Aerodynamics, teardrop, futuristic, beauty through function and simplifcation

Flowing curves, smooth exteriors

- Inspired by aerodynamic and nautical design

- Removing ornamental features out of art deco

- Long horizontal windowing

Aerodynamic  concept of motion and speed developed from scientific thinking

- Art deco branch w/ simple practical products with luxurious overtones

- From cars inspired by efficiency

Materials: Chrome detailing, new materials e.g. Bakelite

Phillipe Starck (Post-modernism)

  • Democratic design (inclusive) in architecture and interior design

  • Enhance user experience through playful designs rather than amazing function

  • E.g. Juicy Salif looks nice but high centre of mass = unstable and doesn't fit orange but tripod = stability & form is nice

Charles & Ray Eames (Modernism/US industrial)

Moulded furniture

  • Plywood and polymers

Cubist and de stijl architecture

Lounge chair wood (LCW)

  • Leg splints from laminated plywood forms

Beauty, comfort, mass-producible

Marianne Brandt (Bauhaus)

Geometrically pure, simple form = longevity and relevance

Famous for kitchenware rangeland bauhaus desk lamp

Dieter Rams (Functionalism i.e. modernism)

Like the Bahaus of consumer electronics

  • Replacing ornamental wooden casings with functional minimal designs

  • Incorporating modern tech like transistor and thermoplastics

10 principles: aesthetic, innovative, eco-friendly, long lasting, unobtrusive, useful, understandable, honest, detailed, minimal

Margaret Calvert (Modernism)

Road signs

  • Created font readable at high speeds

  • Stylised silhouette

  • Minimalist

James Dyson (Modern/post-modern/US industrial)

US industrial as he creates something to desire

Adding innovative tech to existing items to improve them w/ product analysis

DC01 bagless vacuum

  1. Changed dust collection = suction maintained

  2. 3D large form produced by ABS injection moulding

  3. Contrasting colour schemes highlight key functions

  4. Large no. of integral fixings = maintenance and disassembly

  5. Clear dust collector shows when emptying needed

  6. However dust is ugly
