In the exam, there are 5 topics that are usually asked about. These are:-
The headline of the article
The picture in the article (how it enhances it etc)
Key words and phrases
The writer's opinion ­ when asked about the writer's point of view, you first have to explain what it is, then
explain some of the opinions written to support the view, and finally some of the facts used to back up the
point of view.
The purpose of the article
The tone of an article and the language used within it can
be things like:-
Sarcastic
Thoughtful
Factual
Concerned
Descriptive ­ paints a picture
Opinionated
Emotive
Controversial
Provocative
Informal
Light-hearted
Colloquial
Persuasive
Dramatic
Humorous
Serious
Scientific
Non-fiction texts
In the exam, the question will consist of three parts and will require the
following things to be talked about:-
Look for linguistic devices ­ e.g. similes, metaphors, alliteration, onomatopoeia,
rhetorical questions, emotive language, interesting punctuation, sentence
lengths etc.
