The behavioural explanation for schizophrenia
Operant conditioning can be used to explain the development of schizophrenia.
Attention is the positive reinforcement: a person's abnormal behaviour attracts
people attention so the individual will enjoy this attention and as a result increase
the abnormality of their behaviour in order to gain more attention from people.
The behaviour will become more abnormal until they are classed as schizophrenic.
Hard to see how attention on its own can account for extreme symptoms
of schizophrenia.
The behavioural explanation can account for why behavioural symptoms
can get worse after a person is diagnosed as schizophrenic.
