The behavioural explanation for schizophrenia
Operant conditioning can be used to explain the development of schizophrenia.
Attention is the positive reinforcement. A person's abnormal behaviour attracts
people's attention, sot the potential schizophrenic will enjoy this attention and as a
result will increase the eccentricity of the behaviour in order to gain more
attention from people. The behaviour will become more eccentric until they are
classified as schizophrenic.
Hard to see how attention on its own can account for extreme symptoms
of schizophrenia such as catatonia.
The behavioural explanation could account for why behavioural symptoms
can get worse after a person has been diagnosed with schizophrenia.
