INTRODUCTION
Light (solar insolation) is affected by latitude,
cloud cover, seasonal and daily changes.
The Sun emits electromagnetic radiation across
most of the electromagnetic spectrum. Although
the Sun produces Gamma rays as a result of
the nuclear fusion process, these super high
energy photons are converted to lower energy
photons before they reach the Sun's surface and
are emitted out into space. As a result, the Sun
does not emit gamma rays. The Sun does,
however, emit X-rays, ultraviolet, visible
light, infrared, and even radio waves. Mostly
infrared, visible, and ultraviolet light reaches

THE DIFFERENT WAVELENGTHS OF
UV
UV-C - shortwave UV is used for air, surface and
water disinfection. Unintentional overexposure
to UV-C causes skin redness and eye irritation,
but does not cause skin cancer. It is the most
dangerous but cannot get to the earths surface
because of the ozone layer.
UV-B - A dangerous part of sunlight. Most solar
UV-B is absorbed by the ozone layer. Prolonged
exposure causes sun burn and could result in skin
cancer.
UV-A - Long wave UV causes premature skin
