The sanctity of life basically means that all life is sacred. People that hold
strong views on the sanctity of life are called pro- life, these people go along
with the biblical teachings that, God is the giver and creator of life and
people have no right to destroy what he has given. People are seen as
`created in the image of God'-imago dei- so it is wrong to harm another
human because it is harming god.
The incarnation, according to Christian teaching, reaffirms the sanctity of
human life as God himself became human:
· So god created humankind in his image. (Genesis 1:27a)
· God blessed them, and said to them, `Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the
Earth and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over
the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves upon the living
Earth.'(Genesis 1:28)
And if God is the creator of life it is down to him to say when it should start and
end. A person does not have the freedom to decide to end his own or
anyone else's life.
· He said `Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked I shall return
there; the Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of
the Lord.'…read more
