Nervous System
What is the Nervous System?
Nervous Sytem = The nervous system is a nerve connected to your brain to make you
move your body. This can help you climb, play sports and walk, run.
What coordinates the Nervous System?
The Brain
What are reflex actions?
Extra rapid responses to a stimulus Involves the nervous system bypasses brain
Receptors = Groups of specialised cells.
Detect change in environment (stimuli) turns in electrical signals
Receptors usually in sense organs
Each organ has receptors sensitive to particular kinds of stimulus.
Skin Touch, pain, temperature, pressure
Tongue Chemicals in food
Nose Chemicals in air
Eyes Light
Ears Sound, position of head
What is the CNS?
CNS = Central Nervous System (Brain and Spinal Cord)
Receptor stimulated sends signal along neurones to brain. Brain responds
Effector = Part of body that produces a response (normally a muscle)
What are Neurones?
Neurones = Nerve Cells.
They carry the electrical signal
Sensory Neurone, Relay Neurone,
Motor Neruone
Sensory Neurone = Carry signals
from receptors to spinal cord or

Here's a taster:

Relay Neurone = Carries messages from one part of CNS to another
Motor Neurone = Carries signal from CNS to effectors
What is are synapses?
Synapses = When 2 neurones meet, there is a gap called a synapse
Synapses cross using chemicals
One neurone releases the chemical in gap
The chemical spreads across the gap and
makes the next neurone transmit an
electrical signal
Chemicals are called neurotransmitters
What are Reflex Actions?
Receptor stimulated sends signal to CNS
(brain coordinates reponse) sometimes
