ABYSSINIA:
WHERE: Abyssinia, now known as Ethiopia.
PROBLEM: Italy wanted to expand it's empire. Chose Abyssinia
because Mussolini wanted revenge after failing to invade in 1896.
ACTIONS OF THE LEAGUE: Haile Selassie went to the
League for help. League tried to talk to Mussolini but took no
further action. Secretly thought Abyssinia should go to Italy
(the Hoare-Laval Pact)
RESULTS: May 1936, Italy conquered Abyssinia. The
Abyssinians were no match to the modern Italian army. 1937 ­
Italy left the League.

MANCHURIA:
WHERE: China
PROBLEM: Japan wanted an empire and raw materials. Chose Manchuria
because government was weak. Invaded after saying they were sabotaging a
Japanese railway that went through Manchuria. Created the independent state
of Manchukuo. China appealed to the League.
ACTIONS OF THE LEAGUE: The League sent an advisor, Lord Lytton to
investigate. Took a year to write his report. Decided Japan must leave
Manchuria, and the League also decided this.
RESULTS: Japan walked out of the meeting, refusing to return Manchuria.
In 1933, Japan left the League and invaded Jehol (next to Manchuria).
