After leaving school, Hitler worked as a sign writer, a house painter, even a road
sweeper in Vienna. At times a virtual tramp, he followed local politics. Vienna had a
strongly anti-Jewish mayor at the time. Hitler began to blame the Jews for dominating
industry and the art world and reducing chances for people like him.
Hitler and the First World War
In 1913, Hitler went to Munich. He arrived with one small bag and
intending to study art. Then the First World War began.
Hitler saw the war as a way to unite all Germanic people of Europe.
Hitler joined the German Army. He saw harsh times. Out of 3,600
men in his regiment, on 611 survived. He became corporal and was
awarded the Iron Cross First Class for bravery. He later referred to
it as `the most memorable period of his life'.
German defeat was a blow to Hitler. He hated the concept of

After the war
Hitler was given an army assignment checking up on political groups. One of
these was the German Workers' Party (DAP), a small group founded on the 9th
of January 1919; there were only 23 people present at the first meeting and 40
at the second.
Eventually, Hitler joined this group- becoming its seventh committee member-
and turned it into the Nazi Party. Within 15 years, the Nazi Party would be the
