  • More than 300,000 women joined the armed forces
  • Served other positions than just "nurses", replaced men in non-combat jobs e.g radio operators
  • Held the same rights/privileges as maele veterans
  • Increase of independence

Disadvantages

  • Women were not expected to fight
  • Only earned 65% of what men did
  • Temporary response to emergency
  • Only 18% of respondents in an 1945 poll approved of female labour
  • Still expected to be a housewife aswell as work

Evaluation

Although, after the war social attitudes and stereotypes had not completely changed, it was clear that this was forging a new wave of independence for women. They certainly proved their capabilities and ability, making them equal to men despite their lack of euqal treatment. The way to equality still had a long journey to go but women were beginning to findn their feet and not only do the same work as men but feel equal to them. Their involvement in both labour and military services made them valuable assests to the war which noone could distinguish. Production was key to the war effort and without the "temporary labour" of women, it wouldn't have been possible.
